Loch Lomond golf

Courses around the loch, and who can play them

The famous Loch Lomond Golf Club at Luss is private, so you cannot simply turn up and play it. Visitors can book at other clubs around the loch, including Callander, Buchanan Castle at Drymen, Aberfoyle, Vale of Leven at Alexandria and The Carrick at Cameron House. We do not list green fees: the club pages we checked either do not show them or show them without a date, so check the booking page for today’s price.

Course by course: who can play and how to book

Callander is the simplest to book. Visitors are welcome, and you reserve through the club's BRS visitor system or by phone on 01877 330090, up to 14 days ahead. The course has 18 holes over 5,151 yards at par 66, and its par-3 15th is described as one of Scotland's most iconic short holes. Availability is very limited for Groupon or Itison bookings, especially at weekends.

Buchanan Castle at Drymen is a James Braid parkland course on the Buchanan Castle Estate. It has 18 holes over 6,059 yards at par 70, the longest of the Park's three 18-hole courses listed by the National Park Authority. Non-members can book tee times online, or phone 01360 660330. The club site does not publish green fees.

Aberfoyle Golf Club, at Braeval, was founded in 1890 at the foot of the Menteith Hills. It has 18 holes over 5,218 yards at par 66. Visitors can book daily, with the first tee at 8am and the last at 4pm, and weekend bookings start at 10am. The phone number is 01877 382493.

Vale of Leven at Alexandria, near the south end of the loch, was founded in 1907 and has views of Loch Lomond. Its home page does not set out visitor terms, so phone 01389 752351 before you travel. The Carrick at Cameron House is an 18-hole championship course with notable elevation changes and views from the 10th and 14th holes. Visitors book through the resort's online system or on 01389 312 210, but whether non-residents can play is not stated.

Further out, the National Park Authority lists Killin Golf Club in the Perthshire Highlands, with a 9-hole main course and an 8-hole wee course. It also lists St Fillans at the eastern end of Loch Earn, with 9 holes, and Strathendrick beside the River Endrick, established in 1901, with 9 holes. Ross Priory has 9 holes played twice, 5,816 yards at par 70. The authority says to contact each course to pre-book, and does not publish their visitor terms.

Choosing the right course

If you want a full-length test, Buchanan Castle is the longest 18-hole course the National Park Authority lists, at 6,059 yards. If you want a shorter round with a famous hole, Callander and Aberfoyle are both par 66.

If you want a championship course on the shore, The Carrick is the one to ask about, though you should confirm non-resident access first. If a quick nine holes suits your day better, Killin, St Fillans and Strathendrick are all 9-hole courses.

Pair the course with the village. Callander's car parks charge £3 for 2 hours, £4 for 4 hours and £6 all day, with pay and display from 8:45am to 5pm. Aberfoyle's Riverside car park is free.

A practical rule for any of these clubs: phone or use the booking system before you set out, and have a second plan. The National Park Authority itself says to contact the course before visiting to pre-book a tee time, and several clubs limit weekend slots.

Getting to the courses without a car

Bus 309 runs from Balloch to Balmaha via Gartocharn and Drymen, which serves Buchanan Castle. The Trossachs Explorer links Aberfoyle and Callander, with 4 return journeys daily all year since it relaunched on 29 June 2026.

Direct ScotRail trains run from Glasgow to Balloch about twice an hour, which is the closest rail link to Vale of Leven and The Carrick. The Ember E4 coach from Edinburgh also stops at Callander.

Before you book

Ring or check the booking page for the current fee and visitor rules, because the club pages we checked either do not show green fees or show them without a date. Allow for daylight if you book late in the day, since Aberfoyle's last tee is at 4pm.

The private Loch Lomond Golf Club at Luss, G83 8NT, is for members, those proposed by members, or those expressly invited by the club. If you have no invitation, pick one of the clubs above instead.

For the surrounding area, see the village of Luss and Balloch at the south end. Planning a wedding near a course? Venues for weddings are covered separately. Who wrote this and how we check it is on who writes this guide, and top things to see and do lists everything else.
