Balloch

Town at the loch’s southern tip

Verdict

Go if you want an easy car-free loch day from Glasgow: train, waterfront and a boat.

Skip if you want a quiet village or serious hills. Luss and Balmaha do that better.

Is Balloch worth it?

Balloch is worth it for an easy, car-free loch day from Glasgow: the train line ends near the water, with boats, the country park and the aquarium close together. It is a busy gateway town, not a quiet village, so choose Luss or Balmaha for peace. Staying over? Compare places to stay in Balloch before you book.

Go if you want

A day on and beside the water without a car: a cruise, the waterfront, the country park and a family attraction.

Think twice if you want

A quiet lochside village or a big hike from the door. Check weather and the best time to go before you pick a day. Bringing a tent? Camping around Balloch needs a permit from March to September.

Things to do in Balloch

  1. Loch Lomond Shores

Open 7 days · outdoor areas never close

The waterfront hub, with places to eat, the shops below and the pier. The foyer toilets are open 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5:30pm on Sundays. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome, and many shops allow dogs. The full guide to Loch Lomond Shores has the detail.

  2. SEA LIFE Loch Lomond

Advance from £14 · on the day £21

Pre-booking is essential, and under-2s go free. In winter it opens 11am to 4pm on weekdays (last entry 2:50pm) until 18 December, and 10am to 5pm at weekends. Read what to expect at the SEA LIFE aquarium before you book.

  3. A loch cruise

    1 h £18.50 · winter: 10:15, 11:30, 13:00

Sweeney's Cruise Co sails from Balloch all year. In winter only the 1-hour Experience Cruise (adult £18.50) is on its booking calendar, at 10:15, 11:30 and 13:00, and the company says winter sailings can depend on demand, so you can also buy on board. The longer trips return with the main season: the Island Discovery (2 hours, adult £29) for the islands you can visit on the loch, the Evening Cruise (90 minutes, £23.50) and Into the Highlands (70 minutes, £20). The office is on the riverside and open 9am to 4pm, 7 days.

  4. Balloch Castle Country Park

    Parkland on the shore

Woodland, lawns and a walled garden above the water, open 24 hours with no entry charge listed by the council. The main entrance is opposite the bus station. The castle itself is a council building under repair, and the council lists no visits inside it; the toilets there open 9am to 2:30pm in winter, longer in summer.

  5. Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre

    Closed until mid-February · adult £10

Eagles, hawks, falcons and owls in woodland next to Loch Lomond Shores, about 10 minutes' walk from the station. It closes to visitors for the winter from early November and reopens in the second week of February (no exact 2027 date yet); flying shows run at 11:30am and 2pm from March to October. Dogs are not allowed. Prices, show rules and access are in our guide to the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre.

  6. Ferry to Luss and Balmaha

    1 h · adult £28 return · not in winter

Sweeney's ferry links Balloch with Luss, and Luss with Balmaha, at £28 return for adults. No ferry sailings were on sale for the winter or for spring 2027 dates when we checked on 2 November 2026, so plan on bus 305 to Luss or 309 to Balmaha until the summer timetable is published.

  7. Shopping at Loch Lomond Shores

Outdoor gear, tweed, whisky · hours page dated 2025

For outdoor clothing and kit, the Shores has Hawkshead, Mountain Warehouse and Sports Direct; for tweed, Tweeds of Scotland sells Harris Tweed jackets, knitwear and kiltwear; for whisky and gifts, Stevie's Drams and Lachlan's. Frasers department store, Grapetree and Loch Lomond News complete the list. The Shores' hours page still carries 2025 dates, so treat its times as a guide: most shops 10am to 5:30pm daily, and Frasers, Sports Direct and Mountain Warehouse until 6pm. The Loch Lomond Christmas Festival, with market stalls and street food, is on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December 2026, 10am to 5pm, free entry, and a Sunday market runs on the first and third Sunday of the month, 10am to 4pm. Need a kilt altered? The Shores lists kiltwear but no alterations service, so phone Tweeds of Scotland before you make the trip for it.

  8. Antartex Village, Alexandria

Daily 10am–5pm · one stop before Balloch

Antartex Village is an Edinburgh Woollen Mill shopping village on Heather Avenue, Lomond Industrial Estate, in Alexandria, the town one stop before Balloch on the Glasgow train. The company's store finder lists it as open daily, 10am to 5pm, with knitwear, Harris Tweed accessories and homeware, plus concessions including a whisky shop, Regatta, Craghoppers, Tog 24 and Pavers shoes. It has a customer car park, toilets and a restaurant. Its listing shows no kilt alterations, so phone 01389 721045 before going for that.

  9. Fishing the Leven and the loch

    Permit from a local shop

Balloch sits where the River Leven leaves the loch. Loch Lomond Gift House on Balloch Road sells the angling association’s tickets, and Loch Lomond Leisure hires self-drive fishing boats at Loch Lomond Shores. Seasons, prices and the salmon release rule: fishing the River Leven.
