Autumn Short Breaks

The appeal of holidaying in Scotland lies in the diversity of the seasons. Autumn in Scotland is one of the most beautiful times of the year, punctuated with beautiful autumn colours.

The landscape is transformed by a breathtaking explosion of colour - purple hued heathers, green, yellow, gold, ochre, orange, bronze, burgundy, brown and russet red. As the days get colder and shorter, enjoy glorious seasonal colours and magnificent sunsets - autumn has the lot!  It’s a photographer’s and artist’s dream!

Take advantage of some great autumn offers and enjoy a short break - click here to view short breaks on Loch Lomond.

What's On Loch Lomond

Within easy reach of Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh, escape the city and enjoy great days out in the Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. Popular events this autumn includes the Loch Lomond Food & Drink Festival at Lomond Shores, music festivals in Callander and Balmaha, walking and wildlife events.

Join us for Halloween or witness fantastic firework displays across the loch on Guy Fawkes night. Head to the National Park this autumn and check out What's On at Loch Lomond.

Ben Lomond Torchlight Challenge

Take part in the Ben Lomond Torchlight Challenge on Saturday 17th September and experience the thrill of being on top of a mountain in the dark, and help raise funds for path repair and mountain rescue! You will be in the safe company of experienced Lomond Mountain Rescue Team members and the NTS Ranger Service. The walk up will be during sunset, and we'll send out a torchlight beacon to the world from the summit, before descending by torch, and hopefully a bit of moonlight.

To participate, you will need to pay a registration fee and raise a minimum sponsorship sum in aid of two good causes - Ben Lomond footpath repair and Lomond Mountain Rescue Team.

This is an arduous walk, which will take several hours and require a good degree of fitness. Please contact us if you are unsure of the suitability of this event for yourself.

For further information and registration pack, please e-mail benlomond@nts.org.uk

Take a drone tour up Ben Lomond, Scotland's most southerly Munro.

Callander Jazz Festival

The annual Callander Jazz & Blues Festival is once again fast approaching and as always will offer a long weekend of superb music.

This year’s Jazz Festival starts on Friday 30th September and carries on until Sunday 3rd October and it features a host of local, national and international jazz and blues performers, the musicians have been carefully selected so that visitors to the event can enjoy more or less every style of live jazz and blues music.

Now in its 11th year, this year’s festival promises to be a long weekend of live music with some great headline bands. From solo artists to 21-piece big bands and everything in between with over three hundred musicians, this will ensure a long weekend of great music here in the autumn splendour of the Trossachs.

For great accommodation visit the Poppies Hotel in Callander

Balmaha's Braw Weekend

Balmaha’s Braw Weekend is back bigger and better for 2016. A weekend of food, drink, music and entertainment takes place on the banks of Loch Lomond, on land behind The Oak Tree Inn from Friday 30th September till Sunday 2nd October.

On Saturday and Sunday, from 11 am till 5pm, expect lots of family fun, food, drink, music and entertainment. Entry is free, plus there's plenty of free parking. Much of the festival is undercover, so even if the weather isn't great you'll have a good day out. Events include live music from local musicians, food & drink stalls and demonstrations, fairground rides and children's entertainment.

On Saturday night from 6pm, there will be live music from four top Scottish acts - Have Mercy Las Vegas, Dave Arcari, Miracle Glass Company and Mark McGowan. Tickets for this concert are £5, payable at the door.

Wildlife and Nature This Autumn

Enjoy strolls through the oak woodlands and pine forests as a sense of relaxation takes over the landscape. Autumn also brings its own particular wildlife spectacles.

This is the time for the rutting season with the sight of a majestic red deer stag. Birds from the Arctic migrate south and join us in Scotland while golden eagles, white tailed sea eagles, black grouse, ptarmigan, capercaillie, crossbills and many other species remain. Now is the time to visit Loch Lomond as the landscape transforms.

Could there be anything nicer than enjoying Loch Lomond? A piece of wild Scotland all to yourself with only the wildlife and landscape to enjoy!

Autumn at Loch Lomond by Mary Young

The hills wear purple cloak of heather
Early morning mist phantoms dance together
Spires of red, yellow, copper and golden brown
Are mirrored in the gunmetal water, deep down
A Skein of pinkfeet geese, in V-formation
has flown non-stop to this balmier location
Whooper swans skim in low over the birch trees,
trumpeting their entrance to the autumn breeze
In still waters, trout and salmon are spawning
In dark grey corries, red deer stags are roaring
